Ohisama Connect is an imaginative, multilayered resource set which reflects the dynamic teaching philosophy of its creator, Mary Taguchi. It comprises three interconnected sections; Core, Sunbeams and Clouds. The Core book lays down basic working classroom Japanese, establishing the target language as a means of communication. Sunbeams gives topic directions which build on the Core content, extending the language, and Clouds provides a rich collection of cultural information and activities involving creating, playing, singing and celebrating.
The resource set provides a complete course framework, and includes material for the teacher and photocopiable material for learners.

This book is designed for beginner-level adult learners of the Japanese language, who are interested in expressing intellectual topics and/or their own opinions rather than short dialogues about everyday life. In fact, this resource was developed for non-Japanese diplomats and government workers who studied at the Japan Foundation Japanese-Language Institute, Kansai. Social, economic and cultural themes were selected to meet adult learners’ interests and social needs. Guidelines for creating a manuscript for a concrete and easy-to-understand speech are given under each topic, such as a flowchart for a speech with conventional expressions and subtopic patterns, functional expressions shown both in skeleton and example forms, and a vocabulary reference. Also some questions about the topics are given to students, and the answers to the questions can be made into subtopic sentences within the speech. Presentation tips to attract audiences are also featured. This text is very practical and highly recommended to prepare for Japanese language speech contests.
