A new Activity Resource for teachers of Japanese was released by the Japan Foundation Sydney in April. The Giant Game Sheet is a large (150cm x 100cm) double sided sheet using the themes of コンビニ (‘Convenience Store’) and 日本の家 (‘Japanese House’), and is aimed at middle years students. The teacher’s handbook contains game ideas designed to enable the teacher to control the activity while involving the whole class.

This new Activity Resource is now available for donation to schools. Teachers wishing to request this item should return their 2004 Donation Materials Request Form, which was sent to schools with the February issue of Dear Sensei. If you require a new 2004 Donation Materials Request Form, you can download one from the SLC website (http://www.jpf.org.au/slc/donation/donation.htm#forms), and return it to the SLC.

Postage for the Giant Game Sheet is $12.
Please remember to include postage stamps with your Request Form.

We would love to hear about how you are using Activity Resources with your classes - if you have found the ideas in the teacher’s handbook to be useful, how you have incorporated your own ideas, and whether or not the resources have proven to be beneficial for your class. If you would like to offer some feedback, please feel free to contact us on (02) 9957 5322 or email Cathy_Jonak@jpf.org.au or Himiko_Negishi-Wood@jpf.org.au.

A second Activity Resource originally planned for release in April will be released at a later date. We will advise in Dear Sensei and on our website when this new Activity Resource will be available.

As someone who enjoys language learning, I am delighted to find that twelve months at the Japan Foundation has furnished me with numerous opportunities to use and develop my Japanese skills. I am equally delighted that it has also furnished me with twenty days of annual leave, which is why I am currently enjoying the waning days of April under the cherry blossoms in northern Japan. Ah.... temples, sake, hot canned coffee from vending machines and trains which actually turn up when they’re supposed to - North Sydney doesn’t have quite the same appeal.
