This video series shows live-recordings of Japanese-language classes by two famous teachers in Japan, Ms. Rumi SEI and Mr. Shin’ichiro YOKOMIZO, who are also the authors of several textbooks and teacher’s reference books. The teachers explain their teaching methods, even referring to their mistakes in the recorded classes, and give you tips for improvement. Although their teaching styles in the videos seem to be developed for adult students rather than primary or secondary, both teachers try to make their classes clear, time efficient and communicative.

In this video, SEI’s class caters for adults who have never studied Japanese formally, but need to master survival Japanese in a short time. In a classroom where the use of English language is strictly limited, SEI makes the most of non-verbal communication in her teaching. Her body language, classroom layout and use of colour in her teaching aids are strategies to reduce unnecessary confusion among students, and keep them concentrated on learning the Japanese. In the later part of this video, SEI answers questions about her teaching style, including applications of that style to private lessons or larger class situations, and some aspects of teaching not demonstrated in the recorded model class.

YOKOMIZO’s classroom setting in this video is more like a high school or language college, as all the students are young and English is used as a medium. In this video he uses particles,「は」 「が」 「お」 「も」 to show how to develop an intensive lesson plan for a strict time period. Teachers need to present new study objects and explain them clearly to students in the one class, however, YOKOMIZO emphasises the importance of practicing the studied objects in order to clarify them with the students. He divides the practice session into several stages, starting from simple drills and moving on to short conversation practices in contexts where the new grammar knowledge must be used, and finally on to role plays with more opportunity for students to use their own contexts in order to create realistic conversations. Points to maximise the functions of each stage of practice are carefully explained in the video.

Japanese “all time favourite” children’s songs are translated into English. The books and CDs are helpfully edited for singing in both languages. All songs have vocal scores with lyrics in English and Japanese and the CDs include full verse in both languages. Often when Japanese popular songs are translated they imply a totally different meaning, probably because of the difference in the syllablic system, however, the English translations here all convey the true meanings of the original Japanese versions amazingly well. Please note that some songs such as 「ふるさと」 and(あか)とんぼ」have unusual vocabulary for beginner level students because they are written in old style Japanese.

This reference book is good for elementary/intermediate students who are preparing for the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT), especially for mastering grammatical items and forms of expression. All study objects are sorted by functions, with grammatical notes given in English and Chinese. The layout in this textbook enables students to pursue JLPT preparation efficiently for several reasons. The JLPT level (3 or 4) is indicated upon all the studying items. More advanced studying items are also marked so students with little time can study them later. Before studying a group of similar functional expressions, a level checker test is given at the beginning of each chapter.
