入門日本語(にゅうもんにほんご) First lessons in Japanese
水谷信子
アルク  ALC Press 810.78 MIZ
ISBN: 4872342372 (textbook), 4872342380 (cassette tape)
A self-study textbook designed for the beginner to understand the most basic structures of the Japanese language and begin simple verbal communication in Japanese.
A dialogue is given as the foundation of each lesson, and is followed by a supporting Romanised dialogue with accent/prominence/intonation guide marks, English translation, new vocabulary lists and grammar notes. Although plenty of Romanised text and English translations are given in this textbook, separate hiragana/katakana acquisition practice is needed as there is no particular lesson for learning Japanese characters in this book. Cassette tape also available.

きょうからはじめる日本語(にほんご) First up Japanese
村野良子
ALC Press 810.78 MUR
ISBN: 487234812 (textbook), 4872348133 (cassette tape)
Another self-study textbook for beginners, the concept of this book is similar to “First Lessons in Japanese” but with slightly more difficult contents. The basis of study in this textbook is to understand dialogues used in everyday situations. All dialogues are given in both plain and polite forms. The author recommends that learners use the textbook after 50 hours of Japanese study, and comments that completing the first half of this book - - will prepare learners for taking Level 4 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test, and the second half - - for Level 3. In , dialogues contain more cultural content, and short columns with background information on life in Japan are also introduced.

たのしいどうぶつえん
NISSEN, Kellie & MURAKAMI, Ritsuko
Australian Capital Territory Education, Youth & Family Service, [Japanese classroom kit]
810.725 ACT
A classroom kit containing colourful flash cards, wallpapers, photocopiable sheets and a teacher’s instruction book. The animals used for the cards are from the National Zoo and Aquarium in Yarralumla, ACT. This kit may be used as a classroom resource by itself, however the producers recommended teachers use the kit in conjunction with a school excursion to the zoo, so that children are encouraged to use their language skills outside the classroom. In the teacher’s book, a number of study plans are introduced, with language focused on upper primary and lower secondary students, and most of them have pre-visit/post-visit activities that make the excursion more effective.
