The Annual Australian Japanese Language Speech Contests
The Annual Australian Japanese Language Speech Contests were held in each state and territory during August and September. The contests were divided into four divisions: High School Senior, Open Beginner, Open and Background Speaker. In all contests and across all divisions, it was wonderful to see such a diverse group of young speakers, whose enthusiasm and effort impressed the judges and audiences alike. The 34th Annual NSW Contest was held at the Sydney Language Centre on 31 August, in cooperation with the Consulate-General of Japan, Sydney. Thirty-eight students of Japanese from high schools and universities across the state participated in the NSW contest.

Addressing participants in the NSW contest, the Consul-General of Japan, Mr Yasuaki Nogawa, encouraged the speakers to continue with their studies in Japanese, using the expression
継続(けいぞく)(ちから)なり」, or “perseverance will have its rewards”.

The first place winners in all states and territories - twenty-two students from around the country - proceeded to the 34th Annual Australian National Final, held at the Sydney Language Centre on 19 October.
