Abbreviations for the Internet
Kanji Vocabulary in computers

 
 
 
  Though the Japanese word 「ホームページ」 was derived from the English "Homepage", they are semantically not the same. "Homepage" in English is usually used to indicate the top page of websites, whereas  ホームページ in Japanese has a wider meaning, which includes "web page", "websites" or "World Wide Web".

「この写真(しゃしん)はホームページに()せましょう」
"Let's upload this picture on our web page."
教育省(きょういくしょう)のホームページを()てください」
"Please look at the Department of Education website."
「メールは使(つか)えますが、ホームページは()られません」
"I can use e-mail, but I can't get on the web."

   
 
  Japanese is rich in abbreviations, and there are many such expressions used in relation to the Internet.
 
  • 「コピペ」←コピー&ペースト(Copy and Paste)
  • 「メルアド」←メールアドレス(E-mail Address). 「メアド」 is also used.
  • 「メル(とも)」←メール(とも)だち(E-mail Friend)
  • 「レス」←レスポンス(Response)
  • 「カキコ」←()()(Message, especially on a bulletin board)
   
 
  Many technical terms related to computers are カタカナ words from English, but kanji vocabulary is also used. Which are the English equivalents for the following terms? Answers below.
