  IT Seminar - 28 June
In June, the Sydney Language Centre held a one-day seminar on Using the Internet in Japanese-Language Teaching. The session, presented by the SLC’s advisory lecturer Kazuhiro Isomura, was attended by sixteen teachers. Topics covered included setting up your computer to use Japanese, useful Japanese-language tools on the Internet, searching the web in Japanese and using the ‘Minna no Kyôzai Site’ web resource.

  Intensive Seminar - 7-11 July
The SLC’s six-monthly Intensive Seminar for Japanese-language teachers was held at the SLC office from 7-11 July. Twenty-four middle years teachers from around Australia, and five from New Zealand, attended the week-long seminar, which focussed on language upgrading and teaching strategies. Participants were immersed in a Japanese-language environment for the full five days.
As well as Japanese-language classes, the seminar included a session by guest lecturer Mary Taguchi, a visit to the Nihongo Tanken Japanese-Language Centre, and optional Japanese cookery and karaoke evenings. The participants reported that they were able to form new networks with other teachers, and welcomed the exchange of teaching ideas. The next Intensive Seminar will be held in January 2004, for senior teachers.
Applications will be available from November this year - please see your educational jurisdiction’s newsletter, or our website, around that time.

The Japanese Langauage Speech Contest in Australia 2003
The State and Territory Speech Contests are held annually in Australia in cooperation with the local Japanese diplomatic missions and the Sydney Language Centre, under the auspices of the Japan Foundation Head Office in Tokyo. This year will be 34th year that the contests have been held since their inception in 1969. Since 2000, with the ever-expanding interest in studying the Japanese language, the SLC, in consultation with Japanese diplomatic missions and the speech contest committees in each state and territory, has redefined the contest divisions to ensure that the contest is fair to all learners of Japanese language, regardless of their background or situation. In 2003, we have created four completely new divisions (Senior, Open Beginners, Open and Background Speakers Divisions), considering the enthusiasm of all learners and teachers towards the contest.

Full details of all contests (including guidelines, application form and speech contest committee in your state or territory) can be found on our website: www.jpf.org.au If you need more information, you should contact the speech contest committee in your state or territory.

We hope that many students and teachers will attend the contests.

Let’s make this annual event a ‘Big Fun Day’ together!
It’s that time of the year where fun and organised mayhem is a prerequisite, with the approach of the 7th Annual Japanese Language Performance Day & the 4th Creative Art Exhibition, both of which will be held in cooperation with the NSW Department of Education and Training, and the Consulate-General of Japan, Sydney on Sunday 23rd November at our Centre. Japan Book Plaza in Melbourne is proud to sponsor this event this year.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with these events, they form a non-competitive fun day for children of all ages, from pre-school to secondary students who may be studying Japanese, to express their feelings about Japan and the Japanese language and culture in a creative way. The types of presentations and topics are created and produced by the students themselves. In the past we have had the pleasure of seeing many talented, witty and artistic presentations.

The performances range from skits, written and performed by students, to Japanese songs (from the traditional to modern ‘Jpop’) and traditional Japanese folk dances. We would like to extend an invitation to all children who are interested in Japan, Japanese-language teachers and students to get involved in this event. For those of you who are unable to attend the event, please do not be discouraged, as it is possible to submit artwork or video presentations which will also be presented on the day. This year, we will also trial presentations using Power Point. If you are a Japanese teacher in NSW, and have not received any information (guidelines and application form) by the end of August, please contact us on (02) 9957 5322 as soon as possible.
Details and application forms are also available from our website: www.jpf.org.au

    It’s time to start studying...
The 2003 Annual Japanese Language Proficiency Test will be held worldwide on Sunday 7th December. In Australia, the test will be held in Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane and Adelaide. This year the Sydney Language Centre will, in conjunction with the Australia-Japan Friendship Association, SA, conduct the test in Adelaide as a branch site of Sydney. The test has four levels from Level 4 (Basic) to Level 1 (Advanced). The examinee chooses the level which best matches his or her ability. Each test is made up of three sections: Writing-Vocabulary, Listening and Reading-Grammar. Examination fees for 2003 are: Level 1 - $40, Level 2 - $35, Level 3 - $30 and Level 4 - $20. For more information, contact your nearest Japanese diplomatic mission, the test organisation or the SLC website: www.jpf.org.au from the end of August. The Japanese-Language Proficiency Test page of our website has been updated, and you can now listen to a sample from the Listening Section.

From this year, you can download an application form and other necessary information for the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test from our website: www.jpf.org.au. Completed application forms and enquiries should be directed to the test organisation in the city where you wish to sit the test.
The Japan Foundation Library has prepared a range of texts and previous years’ ‘Japanese-Language Proficiency Test Questions & Answers’ which are in booklet form with audio cassette tapes or CDs, and which will provide valuable practice for this year’s test. Please contact the librarian at library@jpf.org.au for details. Check out our website for some great links and more information.

Remember, it’s never too early to start studying! Good luck!
