The 2002 LOTE Awards ceremony, held to promote and award excellence in LOTE teaching and learning in Victoria was presented by the Victorian Department of Education Employment and Training. The winner of the 2002 Japanese Teacher Award was Ms Laurel Nowacki, who teaches at Wodonga Primary School. Ms Nowacki attended the Japan Foundation In-Japan Training Program for Australian and New Zealand Japanese Teachers from January 9 - 26 at the Japan Foundation Japanese Language Institute in Urawa.

We were very sad to say goodbye to Akiko Wada who left us in September 2002. It was a pleasure to work with Akiko, whose friendliness, professional attitude and genuine enthusiasm for her work will be missed not only by staff at the Sydney Language Centre, but I am sure also by the many teachers she helped during her 2-year stay in Sydney. Akiko is now working at the Japan Foundation Japanese Language Institute, Kansai in Osaka. We are however pleased to be introducing our newest staff member, Kazuhiro Isomura.
G'day! I'm Kazuhiro Isomura. I came from Japan to Sydney in September 2002 with my wife and 3-year-old daughter. Maybe some of you know me from the Japanese Language Institute in Kita-Urawa. This is my first visit to Australia. I'm looking forward to meeting, working (and of course playing ^^) with many different people. Hope to see you soon!

Supported by the Japan Foundation Grant Program 'Support Program For Developing Networks of Japanese-Language Teachers and Institutions'

The 2-day Conference Workshop titled, 'Japanese Immersion Education: Theory and Practice', focused on the theory and practice of Japanese immersion education. The conference, facilitated by Mr Cliff Walker and Ms Ellen Jones Walker, international education consultants, included discussions of theoretical and practical implications for this method of second language delivery, exercises and activities. Organised by Kylie Farmer of Huntingdale Primary School, the conference was well-run, comprehensive and cohesive and provided an opportunity to cover many areas of immersion education with a specific focus on Japanese language acquisition. About twenty language teachers and educators attended the conference and, after two days, left with renewed enthusiasm, more theoretical knowledge and some new practical activities to adapt to their teaching situation.

If you are interested in receiving a copy of the conference booklet, please forward a stamped self-addressed envelope to Kylie Farmer at Huntingdale Primary School, Grange Street, Oakleigh South, Victoria 3167.
Or if you have a specific enquiry, email Kylie: farmer.kylie.f@edumail.vic.gov.au

This project was supported by the Japan Foundation Grant Program 'Support Program For Developing Networks of Japanese-Language Teachers and Institutions.' If you are interested in finding out more information about this program please contact, Chief Program Coordinator, Nanayo_Kato-Wilder@jpf.org.au

I hope that you have all enjoyed your holidays and are feeling refreshed for the new year. This is my last issue as editor of Dear Sensei, our new Program Coordinator, Rachel Buckley, is looking forward to bringing you future issues. I have really enjoyed my time here at the Japan Foundation and hope that I have been able to help Japanese Language teachers across Australia in some small way. Although I will miss the Sydney Language Centre staff and the people I have met during my time here I am looking forward to the new challenges that lie ahead. I wish you all the very best with your Japanese Language teaching and will be sure to keep an eye out for interesting developments in the teaching of Japanese Language in Australia.
