The 6th Annual Japanese Language Performance Day & 3rd Creative Art Exhibition
In co-operation with the NSW Department of Education & Training and the Consulate-General of Japan the SLC was pleased to present one of our favourite events, the Japanese Language Performance Day & Creative Art Exhibition on Sunday, 24th November 2002. It was a full house at the Japan Foundation that day, the audience given an opportunity to witness the energy and enthusiasm for Japan and Japanese language shared by the young performers. The walls of the gallery were lined with a colourful display of artwork by students of many ages who chose to express their interest in Japan through creative art.

We were very pleased to welcome Consuls from the Consulate-General of Japan, Sydney, Ms Masayo Tada and Mr Hideyuki Suzuki, Japanese Consultants from the NSW Department of Education and Training, Ms Sally Shimada and Mr Mitsuo Yazaki as guest judges, and Mr Keishi Abe, Education Officer at the Nihongo Tanken Japanese Language Centre as master of ceremonies on the day.

The Japan Foundation Sydney Language Centre Advisory Committee Meeting
We were pleased to welcome representatives from each state and territory to the Sydney Language Centre for this annual meeting on November 29. The meeting is an excellent chance for members to share ideas and discuss the most effective means of supporting Japanese language education in Australia and make recommendations and suggestions to the Centre on its activities relating to the teaching and learning of Japanese in Australian schools. It seems that the decision, made by the government earlier this year, not to continue NALSAS funding, has not affected schools in any way and there is still a lot of support for languages at state level. Areas of development for most states will be technology and the development of strong teacher networks. The outcome of the meeting was very positive and the Sydney Language Centre looks forward to further collaboration, with the various states and territories, on projects to enhance the teaching and learning of Japanese in Australia in 2003.

Intensive Course for Teachers
The Sydney Language Centre held an Intensive Course for senior secondary teachers here at our Centre from January 13 -17 of this year. The teachers who attended really appreciated the opportunity to be immersed in Japanese for a week and have taken new ideas and enthusiasm for teaching back with them to their classrooms, as well as the inspiration to improve their own Japanese language skills. They also appreciated meeting other teachers and the networking contacts that they can continue to develop.
Are you interested in attending a seminar here at the Sydney Language Centre? Information and photos can be found on our website: http://www.jpf.org.au/slc/index.html or contact Rachel on 02 9922 0027.
