The 33rd Annual NSW Japanese Language Speech Contest
The 33rd Annual NSW Japanese Language Speech Contest was held on Sunday 8th September at The Japan Foundation Multi-purpose Room. There were 37 contestants in the event from all over NSW. It was a privilege to see so many enthusiastic and dedicated contestants, and such a variety of speeches across the four divisions. It was especially encouraging to see speakers from all different levels of Japanese language studies participating in the event.

Speech topics ranged from the thought provoking to the amusing. With speeches on personal experiences, discrimination, the changing nature of the world, friendship, psychic powers and more, the range of speeches was diverse, challenging and thoroughly entertaining. We would like to extend our thanks to the judges, guests, sponsors, teachers and audience for making the event such a success. We would also like to particularly thank all the students who participated in the event for their hard work and dedication. It's not an easy task to undertake public speaking in a foreign Language, and for those that did participate we would like to commend your courage and enthusiasm.

We would also like to extend an invitation for all of you to come witness the ability and commitment of these students by attending the 33rd Australian National Final Japanese Language Speech Contest to be held on the Sunday 20th October at The Japan Foundation Multi-purpose Room. Japanese Language Speaking Contest - Coffs Harbour

Japanese Language Speaking Contest - Coffs Harbour The Contest was held at the Community Village, Coffs Harbour by the Australia-Japan Society on Tuesday 18th June 2002. It was a successful event with the audience of parents, friends, Japanese speakers and members of the public filling both the rooms booked at the venue. The youngest contestants were 6 years old, and the eldest were competing in the year 11 and 12 Section. The standard of entries was excellent and the pupils really were a credit to their schools.

All of the primary school students delivered their speeches without reference to notes. The most promising student award was presented to Gabe Churchill of South Grafton High, in Division A, who displayed an obvious delight in learning Japanese and sharing his knowledge of Japanese and Australian life. The Coffs Harbour Australia-Japan Society sponsored Gabe to attend the Japanese Language Speech Contest NSW State Division.

Tetsuko Nichols and Sayaka Shimozono acted as judges for the competition and gave encouraging and useful feedback. All students who competed were presented with a prize. Between the junior and senior sections of the competition a choir of primary school children from Sandy Beach Primary School sang 2 songs in Japanese and were well applauded by the audience. Overall it was an extremely successful event that not only gave the students an opportunity to display their language skills but also encouraged them to pursue their language studies.

Thanks to Wendy Doust, Secretary of Australia-Japan Society of Coffs Harbour, for keeping us updated on news from the north coast of NSW.
