= nuigurumi
Nuigurumi means "soft toy animals" in Japanese. Each classroom at Huntingdale Bilingual Primary School in Victoria has adopted a toy animal to act as its ambassador to other schools - either in Japan, or at schools where the students learn Japanese, such as they do at Huntingdale. The toys are 2 koalas, 2 kangaroos and joeys, a cockatoo and a platypus!

This project encourages students to share their cultural experiences and use their Japanese language skills in an interesting and meaningful way. The toys started travelling in 2000 and have been to various schools in Australia, Japan, the USA and more recently South America. It is a very exciting project that is a great way to encourage children to use their Japanese language skills for a purpose - to communicate and develop friendships with other students learning Japanese around the world. Each animal has its own colourful journal full of photos and messages from around the world.

3 animals have returned to Huntingdale so far this year. Blinky Bill has been to 'La Union' school in Peru, South America, Sub Zero the kangaroo went to St Matthews in Cornubia Queensland where the students created an 'I-movie' introducing their school in Japanese. Kanga & Skip the kangaroos went to Colegio Sao Judas Tadeu in South America.

The photos, stories and messages that came back in their travel journals were very exciting and gave a great insight into the students learning Japanese around the world.

Huntingdale Primary School is happy to hear from any other schools interested in being involved in the project. If other schools are interested they can check out the website: http://www.huntingdaleps.vic.edu.au/
