The Queensland Government, as part of
its promotion of technology, has allocated time for technology education
at in-service seminars. When successfully integrated into lessons,
technology has the advantage of attracting learners' interests and
so it is my hope that it be used widely. However, many teachers give
up, saying things like..."I know that technology is important but
I'm hopeless with computers." " I don't have the time to learn how
to use it anyway..." We considered what kind of technology education
would benefit teachers like these and concluded that a useful resource,
which they would have created by the end of a session, was the ideal
outcome. The Japanese language resource would be a PowerPoint slide
show. (PowerPoint is a Microsoft application
that is used to create effective presentations, often in meetings
and seminars.)
Residential
in-service seminars are held annually at various places throughout
QLD. This year three hours of each seminar were allocated to technology
education. In one seminar the Japanese Advisor led the first hour
and explained briefly what PowerPoint is, how to use it and what you
can do with it. The advisor showed previously prepared pictures to
teachers, who brainstormed ideas of how Japanese language could be
integrated into the presentation.
A technology specialist presented the following two-hour session with
all teachers seated, working at computers while listening to instructions.
The procedure of downloading Japanese input software was also explained
at this time. The two hours flew by and the work produced by the teachers
was submitted to the Japanese Advisor. The work mentioned here, compiled
by the advisor and technology specialist consists of 230 slides which
include sound and the integration of learning content for a teaching
module, (in this case International Treasure Hunt). The final product
was burned onto a CD and distributed to all teachers who attended
the seminar. I am confident that this piece of work, which includes
questions and listening exercises, will be a very useful resource
especially for revision work. |
