BURNHAM, Sue CIS Heinemann. 810.7 HAI 1 *
[Vocabulary][Tape/CD][Listening][Speaking/Conversation][Kana][CD-ROM]
Hai! is a six-stage, semester-length course and this stage 1 book can be used at either the upper primary or lower secondary levels. Each of stages 1 to 6 is based around a broad topic area, the topics selected being consistent with various state curriculum guidelines. Japanese "manga" is used to help students understand situations and practice vocabulary. The good use of photographs helps introduce students to Japanese culture. Some Katakana words are used in the Stage 1 course book although students aren't encouraged to write them yet. The introduction o fthe Katakana syllabary for fast learners is optional in this book.

Westerners often see two starkly different sides of Japan, - the traditional "Kimono/Bonsai" and the "hyper-technology" both of which exist. This program captures people and their life styles both in Tokyo and notably country Hokkaido where Western cameras rarely go. Although this video is more of a snapshot of life in Hokkaido and the big cities rather than a comprehensive study of Japanese culture, it is good for giving refreshing non-stereotyped images of Japan.
