The three Victorian
Japanese Bilingual Schools (Huntingdale, Caulfield and Gruyere Primary
Schools) was able to conclude a fantastic year by organising a Japanese
Immersion Camp held at Philip Island. Ninety year 3 - 6 students participated
enthusiastically in the range of activities planned for the overnight
camp, including feeding the pelicans at San Remo, singing and dancing
around the camp fire, early morning rajio taisoo, and braving the
flying fox and ropes course before finishing with lunch at Seal Rocks.
As well as the camp booklet being all in Japanese with fun language
activities, all staff used Japanese throughout the camp to provide
students with a unique immersion experience. Students were also encouraged
and expected to speak Japanese at all times. This was a wonderful
opportunity for students to develop their language skills in an enjoyable
and exciting environment as well as to make some great friendships
with other students also learning Japanese. Following the success
of the last 2 years, plans are now underway for the 2002 Japanese
Bilingual Schools Camp. |

The
Japan Foundation Grant
Program has provided an invaluable opportunity to
enable teachers and educators from a range of Japanese Bilingual Programs
operating around the globe to share their knowledge and experience
through the establishment of a Japanese Bilingual Schools Network.
This will result in the development of a range of resources and guidelines
to enhance the teaching and learning of Japanese in a variety of settings.
Any teachers interested in being involved in this exciting project,
please contact Kylie Farmer at Huntingdale Primary Bilingual School

It
has been a busy few months here at the SLC with our tenth anniversary
forum - which was a huge success and especially busy for the
lecturers who have been traveling across the country to present
at various seminars. Keep an eye out for new developments on
